IN A SOLID TEAM EFFORT, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS STARCH THE WHITE SOX TO WIN THEIR THIRD EBA SELECT LOOP REGULAR SEASON GAME AT CHRISTIE PITS
Under a blanket of glorious blue skies, our Toronto Playgrounds Mosquito Selects defeated the Martingrove White Sox 9-3 in 4½ innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select Loop action this morning at Christie Pits Diamond 2.
In an well played affair between two talented and well coached teams, TP prevailed for the victory by seizing the moment and capitalizing on most of the opportunities that were presented to them during the proceedings. Also, in a total team effort, TP played a strong all around game on offense and defense to stymie the White Sox at crucial junctures of the game.
Martingrove threatened in the top of the first by putting two runners on base. However, TP southpaw starter Jamie (52) struck out two to keep the Sox off the scoreboard and in the dryer.
In the bottom of the first, White Sox starter Matteo (17) mowed down three with a John Deere X320 Lawn Tractor to keep TP off the scoresheet.
The White Sox drew a pair of back to back walks to open the top of the second to put two ducks on the pond. However, TP reliever Solly (27) found the groove and struck out two to keep Martingrove off the scoring ledger and in the hamper.
Toronto Playgrounds took advantage of four walks and pair of White Sox errors in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead. With James (6) on second after a lead off walk and stolen base, Jamie followed with a sharp grounder to second. However, a Martingrove error on the play allowed Jamie to reach first safely and James to motor home with the first run of the game.
With one out, Theo (17) and Max (20) drew back to back walks to load the bases. Solly followed with a RBI walk that brought Jamie home with the go ahead run. Another White Sox error with the bases juiced to the gills would allow Theo to come home to roost.
Martingrove reliever Tristan (2) entered the fray during the inning to subdue the TP insurgency with two strikeouts to leave the bases loaded.
The White Sox gamely answered back with a pair in the top of the third to trim the deficit to one. After a pair of one out walks put two runners aboard, an errant TP pickoff attempt at third went awry and allowed Rocco (11) to scoot home with Martingrove’s first run of the game. Subsequently, Matteo (17) would deliver a two out RBI single to bring Jeremy (13) home.
Shaken, but not stirred, TP reliever Jashan (13) would strike out one to extinguish the White Sox rally. Jashan also helped himself out by snaring a red hot screaming line drive off the bat of Anton (16) in the webbing of his glove to record the second out.
TP also shone with a pretty 3-2 defensive putout at home plate during the third frame. As Nathan (6) barreled homeward from third, first baseman Nicolas (10) retrieved the ball and made a laser throw to catcher Lucas (1), who adroitly applied the tag on Nathan to record the first out of the inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Toronto Playgrounds utilized four consecutive hits to score three and widen its lead to 6-2. After a pair of singles by Cameron (26) and James put two runners on base, Jamie stroked a RBI double that brought Cameron home.
Jashan would follow with a RBI single to score James. Jamie would subsequently blaze home from third on a Martingrove error.
Despite getting himself into a mojo jojo bases loaded jam in the top of the fourth, TP reliever Cameron (26) found his rhythm and cooly struck out two to leave the bases loaded and keep the White Sox off the scoring ledger and hanging on the laundry line.
Cameron was helped out immeasurably by his teammates on a sterling 2-5 putout play for the first out of the inning. With base runners at second and first, Martingrove attempted a double steal. However, TP catcher Lucas made a lightning throw to third baseman Cooper (42), who applied the tag on a sliding James (12) for the out.In the bottom of the fourth, TP added three insurance runs to the tally and stretch its advantage to 9-2. After a scorching lead off triple by Max, Solly delivered him home with a RBI single.
With one out, Cooper was hit by pitch and Charlie (19) drew a walk to load the bases. Lucas (1) followed with a RBI single to bring Solly homeward. Later, with two outs and the bases juiced, Cameron would be hit by pitch allowing Cooper to mosey home to the nest.
With their backs to the wall, the White Sox refused to quit kept plugging away in the top of the fifth as they scored one to trim the margin to six. With one out and two runners on base, Anton would motor home from third on a dropped third strike to Daniel (7).
However, with some solid D from his friends, TP closer James (6) would strike out one to seal the deal on a hard fought victory.
The TP Mosquito Selects (3-1) hit the road for their next EBA Select Loop game when they travel to Ravina Gardens tomorrow (Sunday, June 7) afternoon to play against the Annette A’s at 3:00 p.m.
