FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS COLLAR THE BULLDOGS TO WIN THEIR SECOND ROUND ROBIN GAME AT ADAMS PARK
Game Post composed with file from Vincent Lynch
Beneath a ceiling of overcast skies, our Toronto Playgrounds Rookie Ball Selects defeated the East York Bulldogs 12-4 in six innings this afternoon at Adams Park to win their second round robin game at the West Hill Rookie Ball Tournament in Scarborough.
Here are the highlights:
- TP came out swinging in the top of the first inning. The first five TP batters got hits with respective singles by Zev (19), Emmett (8), Jordan (10), Sammy (11) and a double by Cassius (5). That offensive burst scored the first three runs of the game. And the hitting parade continued with Christian (7), Rennick (4) and Thomas (23) picking up singles. At the end of the first inning barrage, TP managed to stake themselves to a 5-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the first, East York answered the TP salvo by scoring a run on three hits to trim the deficit to four.
- Toronto Playgrounds kept the offensive locomotive rolling in the top of the second with singles by Emmett, Cassius, Sammy, Sam (2), Desmond (3) and Michael (12). With another four runs added to the tally, TP widened its lead to 9 to 1.
- Despite two solid singles by East York’s first two batters in the bottom of the second, the Bulldogs were unable to score any runs to cut the shortfall.
- East York’s defence tightened up in the top of the third as TP managed just one run to widen its advantage to 10-1. After Thomas turned a single into double with some aggressive base running, Michael delivered him home to roost.
- In the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs went three up and three down on a fly out, strike out, and a ground out sequence.
- East York responded in kind in the top of the fourth by retiring TP in three up and three down fashion with an exciting line drive double play to shut the TP offensive machine down.
- The Bulldogs closed the gap in the bottom of the fourth by scoring two runs on four hits to make it 10-3.
- In the top of the fifth, TP answered by adding a couple insurance runs with Sammy and Christian being plated with Rennick and Thomas picking up some crucial RBI’s that increased the lead to 12-3.
- East York refused to quit as it made a valiant effort to rally in the bottom of the fifth with three singles. However, the Bulldogs bats went cold and they stranded them on the base.
- Even though the skies started to darken over Adams park, the rain held off and allowed one more inning of play.
- TP couldn’t get anything going in the top of the sixth as it went three up and three down.
- At this juncture, TP just had to stop East York from generating any miracle comeback rally in the bottom of the sixth. After a late night and two round robin games played, the boys were tired. However, the team managed to focus enough to allow just one run while registering the necessary three outs to complete a hard fought 12-4 win over the Bulldogs.
The TP Rookie Ball Selects (2-0) are well positioned to advance to the playoff portion of the West Hill Tournament after two stellar round robin victories against the Richmond Hill Phoenix (a 11-9 win on Friday night) and East York. TP has one more round robin game to play against the North Toronto A’s (White).
Unfortunately, due to the continuing rain this weekend, the tournament officials were forced to postpone the remaining Saturday round robin games and the Sunday playoff rounds to next weekend. Stayed tuned for the final outcome a week from now! Same TP channel! Same TP time!
