DOWN 7-6, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS RALLY FOR THREE IN THE FINAL INNING TO USURP THE BOMBERS AND EARN THEIR FOURTH EBA SELECT LOOP VICTORY
Beneath a gentle layer of warm and humid skies, our Toronto Playgrounds Peewee Selects defeated the Bloordale Bombers 9-7 in four innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2.
The game was a riveting and well contested seesaw affair between two talented and well coached teams from start to finish. In the end, TP managed to rally from a 7-6 deficit in their final at bats to emerge for the hard fought victory over a gritty opponent.
Bloordale jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. After Ethan K. (25) had garnered a one out walk and stolen second, Ethan C. (55) stroked a RBI single to bring him home with the opening run of the game.
With a little help from his friends, TP starter Nigel (20) would quell the Bombers insurgency in the first frame.TP right fielder Zenon (1) made a nice catch to rob Logan (77) of a hit in the first and record the second out of the inning.
In the bottom of the first, Bloordale starter Ethan C. (55) would strike out two to keep TP off the scoresheet.
Nigel would strike our one in the top of the second to keep the Bombers off the scoreboard.
With two outs and a Bombers runner on second, TP first baseman Aaron (54) flashed some nifty leather during the inning when he vacuumed up a hot tamale grounder off the bat of Carson (11) and ran over to first to record the third out of the frame.
Toronto Playgrounds scored a run in the bottom of the second to square the proceeding at 1-1. After Will (14) powered an one out triple, Zenon delivered him home with a clutch sacrifice hit.
Ethan C. would strike out one in the second to subdue the TP rebellion.
The Bombers answered back with a run in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead. After Johnny (33) had drawn a lead off walk and stolen a base, Alex (3) stroked a RBI single to bring him home with the go ahead score.With some help from his friends, TP reliever Alden (7) extinguished the Bloordale insurrection in the third.
The TP defense rose to the challenge in the third by making a series of stellar plays to stymie the Bloordale attack. With a run in and a Bombers base runner on second, centre fielder Will made a nice catch on a hard hit ball off the bat of Ethan K. for the first out.
Shortstop Daniel (50) collected a hard grounder off the bat of Ethan C. and made a lightning throw across the diamond to first baseman Aaron for second out. Third baseman Nigel followed suit when he rushed in on a hard chopper off the bat of Logan (77) and made an acrobatic laser throw to Aaron at first for the third out.
In the bottom of the third, the TP offense exploded for five runs to take a 6-2 lead. After Alden singled to lead off the inning, Daniel and Leandro (10) walked to load the bases. Nigel followed with an one out RBI single that brought Alden home with the tying run.
With the bases still loaded, Aaron drew a RBI walk that allowed Daniel to mosey homeward with the go ahead run. Will followed and delivered an infield fly sacrifice that allowed Leandro to come home to roost and put TP ahead 4-2.
With two outs and two ducks on the pond, Zenon stepped into the fray and delivered a grace under pressure 2 RBI single that allowed Leandro and Aaron come homeward bound.Refusing to surrender, the pesky Bombers replied with five in the top of the fourth to retake the lead 7-6. Keying the Bloordale comeback were respective RBI singles from Andrew (8), Carson, Ethan K., Ethan C. Jack (81) chipped in with an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
In a gritty effort, Alden would strike out one to extinguish the Bloordale rebellion in the fourth. With two outs and two Bombers aboard, the inning ended on a nice catch by centre fielder Will that robbed Logan of a potential hit.
Down by one, TP donned their rally caps in the bottom of the fourth in preparation for a comeback rally. Exercising patience at the dish, Daniel, Leandro and Alexander (22) drew consecutive walks to lead off the inning and load the bases. Nigel would be hit by pitch allowing Daniel to shimmy homeward with the tying run.
With the bases still juiced to the gills, Aaron would follow with a RBI walk that allowed Leandro to cartwheel home with the go ahead and winning run. Will would follow with a RBI single that delivered Alexander home with an insurance run.
At this juncture, the game was called since the proceeding has reached its maximum time allotment. With a never say die attitude, TP had emerged with a hard fought victory over the pesky Bombers.
The TP Peewee Selects (4-6) will play their next EBA Select Loop game on Wednesday, August 5 when they host the Martingrove White Sox at Christie Pits Diamond 2 at 7:00 p.m.
