Monday evening was classic ‘September Madness’ at Christie Pits when the annual end of year tournament to wrap up the Toronto Playgrounds House League Baseball season took on an electric atmospheric u-turn last night.

With the Mariners ahead 9-7 over the Angels in the fifth inning, darkness had descended on Diamond 3 (which has no overhead lighting) to the degree that it posed a safety risk to the players. It was at this juncture where the quarter-final game was delayed and moved to Diamond 2, which has incandescent lighting illuminating its playing surface.

From the vantage point of Diamond 2, it was a surreal moment as coaches, players, umpires, parents, family and fans of the Angels-Mariners game packed up their belongings and made the trek to the lighted diamond. A glorious wave of mankind and baseball lovers appeared from out the darkness to settle in and wait out the conclusion of the Peewee Division elimination game between the Rockies and Pirates at Diamond 2.

And yet the moment was magical and another ‘September Madness’ day to remember.

‘September Madness’ continues with three playoff elimination games this evening at Christie Pits.

Here are the games that are on deck for Tuesday, September 15:

MOSQUITO DIVISION PLAYOFF ELIMINATION GAME

  • 5:45 p.m. > Rays @ Royals (Quarter-final) [Christie Pits Diamond 2]

PEEWEE DIVISION SEMI-FINAL PLAYOFF GAME

  • 7:45 p.m. > Pirates @ Lizzies [Christie Pits Diamond 2]

MIDGET DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

  • 8:00 p.m. > Homesteads @ Crawfords [Christie Diamond 1/Dominico Field]

Players, Parents and Coaches are strongly advised to check your tournament schedule carefully for the dates and times of your team’s games. It is very important that we start all games at the start time listed on the schedule…please try to be at the diamond at least 15 to 30 minutes before the start time to give the coaches a chance to get the line ups organized.

Also, it is really important, given that the sun sets earlier and diamond 3 has no lights, and that we have a second game scheduled on diamond 2 each night, that players and coaches are ready to go at the time indicated on the schedule. Games scheduled for 5:45 p.m. will have to start at 5:45 p.m. regardless of how many players are present.

Because we really want to wrap up the tournament by the end of the second full week of September, we will play in conditions of light rain that might have caused us to cancel regular season games. So don’t assume a game is cancelled because of rain. On days of questionable weather, Players and Parents are strongly advised to check the our Twitter feed, the Hotline [(416) 392-1914], or website if the weather is suspect for updates on the status of their games. Updates will be posted 45-60 minutes prior to the official game time.

The annual end of season tournament to wrap up the season is baseball lover’s delight with a cornucopia of games from four age divisions being played over four diamonds at Christie Pits and Bickford Park.

Updated scores and standings will be posted on our website after the conclusion of play each and every night. Game Reports (when available) will be posted the next day.

Additionally, people can also keep up to date with all the scores and important news via our Twitter feed @TPbaseballnews during the tournament. One can also keep up with the scores and standings at the park by viewing our information bulletin board at Christie Pits during the week.

And on the busy weekend of the tourney when 26 games are scheduled to be played, Parents and Players can keep tabs on the tournament by visiting the TP Tournament Scoreboard at the park for the latest updated scores and standings.

There are only 11 games remaining on the Indy car that is ‘September Madness’. Jump behind the steering and drive away to the trip of a lifetime before it’s too late.
