Beneath a ceiling of warm summer skies, the Lizzies defeated the A’s 8-1 in 4 ½ innings of Mosquito Division Quarter-final elimination game action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2 to advance the semi-final round of the ‘September Madness’ tournament.

The proceeding was an entertaining and well executed affair between two talented and well coached squads. In the end, the Lizzies were firing on all pistons as they won convincingly with a balanced repertoire of stellar pitching, strong defense and a patient and opportunistic offense.

Here are the highlights:

  • The A’s threatened in the top of the first by getting two baserunners on board on a pair of walks. However, Lizzies starter Jamie (15) struck out two to leave the bases stranded and keep the Athletics off the scoring ledger.
  • In the bottom of the first, the Lizzies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, Dylan (8) delivered a grace under pressure 2 RBI single to plate Dajuan (7) and Shamus (9).
  • A’s starter Charlie (7) would strike out one in the first to quell the Lizzies insurgency.
  • The A’s defense shone in the first on a nice 2-5 putout when catcher Owen (10) made a laser throw to third baseman Yonah (1), who slapped the tag on a sliding Felix (3) of the Lizzies, who was attempting to steal third and chalk up the first out of the inning.
  • The A’s would answer back in the top of the second to slice the deficit to one. After drawing a one out walk, Owen would steal second. However, the Lizzies committed an error on the play and that allowed Owen to blaze homeward.
  • With a little help from his friends, Lizzies reliever Shamus (9) struck out one in the second to subdue the Athletics rally.
  • The Lizzies would explode for three in the bottom of the second to widen their lead to 5-1. With two outs and the bases loaded, Jamie would stroke a clutch RBI single to bring Luca C. (14) home. Luca P. (1) and Felix would follow with back to back RBI walks that allowed Sebastian (2) and Liam (11) to come home to roost.
  • A’s reliever Anthony (12) would strike out two Lizzies in the bottom of the second.
  • Lizzies reliever Sam (12) would strike out three in the top of the third to keep the Athletics off the scoresheet and in the weight room.
  • In the bottom of the third, the Lizzies would add another two to the tally to increase their advantage to 7-1. With one out and the bases loaded, Dylan would draw a RBI walk to plate Sam. A subsequent faux pas by the A’s would allow Shamus to blaze home with another run.
  • A’s reliever Sasha (14) would strike out three in the third to extinguish the Lizzies insurrection.
  • Jamie would strike out three in the top of the fourth to keep the Athletics off the scoreboard and in the sauna room.
  • The Lizzies would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth to stretch their lead to 8-1. With a two mallards on the pond, Jamie would stroke a clutch RBI double to bring Sebastian home to crow.
  • A’s reliever Daniel (4) would strike out three in the bottom of the fourth to vanquish the Lizzies rebellion.
  • Refusing to end their season, the A’s donned their rally caps in the top of the fifth and loaded the bases in a feverish comeback bid. However, Shamus would strike out the last two Athletics to seal the deal on their quarter-final win.
  • The Lizzies D shone in the fifth on a pretty 5-3 putout when third baseman Julian (5) vacuumed up a stinger off the bat of Stefano (9) and made a rocket throw across the diamond to first baseman Jamie to erase Stefano and record the first out of the inning.
