As the sun slowly descended on the horizon after a hot and humid day, the Astros defeated the A’s 5-3 in 3 ½ innings of Mosquito Division play this evening at Trinity-Bellwoods Park.

Here is an Astros recap of the game:

  • Down 3-0, the pesky Astros rallied for the hard fought victory over the A’s at Trinity Bellwoods.
  • Keying the Astros comeback was a double by Charlie.
  • Astros pitcher Desmond closed out the game by striking out the side in the bottom of the fourth to seal the deal.

Here is an A’s account of the proceedings:

It was a wonderful day for the  A’s first game of the season.  Although a victory was not achieved by the A’s, the game showcased a very high level of skill by both teams in an entertaining and competitive match.

The A’s sent three rookie pitchers [Wolf (1), Eric (6), and James (9)] to the mound against the Astros’ potent batting order. Wolf managed to retire two Astros on strikes. Eric continued the trend by striking out two. And James also struck out a pair in the third inning.

Jonas (8) provided some great defence at third base with an unassisted double play after cleanly fielding a fly ball and stepping on third.

The A’s offence opened the scoring in the top of the first with a 2 RBI single by Jean-Olivier (15). Later, Jonas followed with a RBI single to give the A’s a 3-0 lead.

In the end, the Astros chipped away and rallied by utilizing some timely hits to go ahead by two.

Despite wearing their rally caps, the A’s were shut down in the top of the fourth.
