TAKING NO PRISONERS, THE CARDINALS SHUTOUT TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS AT CHRISTIE PITS TO TAKE HOME THE VICTORY PRIZE
Beneath an embroidered duvet of cool and cloudy skies, the Royal York Girls defeated the Toronto Playgrounds Major Peewee Selects 18-0 in four innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Peewee Select Loop action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2.
The proceeding was an entertaining contest between two talented teams. In the end, the Cardinals used a combination of superb pitching and making the most of their opportunities to cruise to a lopsided victory.
Royal York jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Following a leadoff double and stolen base by Jesslyn (66), Mack (48) delivered a RBI double that brought Jesslyn home with the opening run of the game.
After Mack had stolen third base, Reese (7) hit into a 4-3 groundout that allowed Mack to come home to roost.
TP starter Dash (27) would chalk up a groundout, strikeout and pop out in the first inning to subdue the Cardinals uprising.
In the bottom half of the first, TP would threaten when leadoff batter Simon B. (10) garnered a walk and stole a pair of bases to get himself into scoring position at third base.
However, Royal York Girls southpaw starter Emma (9) found the groove and proceeded to strikeout the next three batters to extinguish the TP threat.
The Cardinals tallied four in the top portion of the second to extend their lead to 6-0. After Charlotte (2) led off the inning with a walk and a pair of stolen bases to reach third, Camille (19) stroked a one out RBI single to bring her home.
With two outs, Payton (3) and Jesslyn garnered back to back walks to load the bases. Mack followed with a clutch three RBI triple that cleared the bases.
TP starter Dash would ring up two strikeouts and a flyout in the second frame to subdue the Royal York insurgency.
With 1-2-3 precision, Cardinals starter Emma mowed down three batters with three strikeouts in the bottom of the second to keep TP off the scoring ledger.
Not to outdone, TP starter Dash returned the favour in the top of the third when he struck out three Red Birds to keep Royal York off the scoreboard.
Toronto Playgrounds would threaten in the bottom half of the third when Lucas (19) and Aaron (7) led off the inning with back to back walks that put two ducks on the pond.
Nonplussed, Cardinals starter Emma would get out of the mojo jojo jam by striking out the next three batters to leave the TP baserunners stranded.
In the top of the fourth, the Royal York Girls sent a conga line procession of eighteen batters to the plate and scored twelve insurance runs to stretch their advantage to 18-0.
After Camille drew a leadoff walk and stole two bases to advance to third, Ainsley (11) hit a fly ball to right field that resulted in a TP error. The faux pas allowed Ainsley to reach first safely and brought Camille home with a run.
Following a walk by Payton that put two Red Birds on base, Jesslyn delivered a two RBI double to bring Ainsley and Payton home.
After Jesslyn took third on a steal, Mack stroked a RBI single to bring her home.
Following a walk by Reese that put two aboard, Emma connected for a two RBI double that allowed Mack and Reese to come homeward and do the shimmy, shimmy, shake.
After Angelica (34) was hit by pitch, Charlotte drew a walk that loaded the bases. Charlize (16) followed and brought Emma home with the Cardinals thirteenth run when she was plunked by a pitch.
Subsequently, after Charlize was caught wandering afar from first base, Angelica and Charlotte would come home to roost on respective steals.
After a pair of one out walks by Camille and Ainsley that put two swans on the lake, Jesslyn delivered a clutch two out two RBI triple that allowed Camille and Ainsley come homeward bound with the Delissio pizza.
Following back to back walks by Mack and Reese that reloaded the bases, Emma drew a bases loaded RBI walk that brought Jesslyn home with Royal York’s final run.
With a five alarm blaze on the diamond, TP reliever Aaron (7) entered the fray in the midst of the fourth frame to tally a strikeout and groundout to quash the Cardinals insurrection.
TP refused to go quietly into the night as they donned their rally caps in the bottom of the fourth. Shael (5) brought the TP fans in the bleacher seats to their feet when he led off the inning with a double that snapped Royal York’s bid for a no hitter.
Unfazed, Cardinals starter Emma mowed down the next three TP batters to wrap a ribbon on a sweet complete game victory.
The TP Major Peewee Selects (3-1) continue their EBA Peewee Select Loop homestand at Christie Pits Diamond 2 next Wednesday (May 29) night when they host the York Riverdogs at 7:30 p.m.
