TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS PREVAIL OVER THE BOMBERS IN THEIR 2019 EBA VARSITY SELECT LOOP SEASON OPENER AT DOMINICO FIELD AT CHRISTIE PITS
Beneath a warm blanket of hazy skies, the Toronto Playgrounds Varsity Selects prevailed 11-8 over the Bloordale Bombers in 4 ½ innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Varsity Select Loop action tonight at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.
Here is a recap of the proceedings courtesy of Paul Bagnell:
TORONTO – Speed on the base paths was the key to an EBA Select season opening 11-8 victory by the TP Varsity (U18) Select team over the Bloordale Bombers.
TP capitalized on three masterful innings of pitching from starter Nolan S., who struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits, two walks and one run over the first three frames.
TP hosted Bloordale under the lights at Dominico Field, and both teams were glad to be finally launching their seasons, after wet spring weather caused several early regular season games to be rained out.
Relievers Savannah U. and Jake C. rounded out the pitching duties for TP.
Only two TP players got hits during the game. Ya’akov N. singled to third base in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Nolan.
In the bottom of the third, Mark B. hit a two RBI line drive over the head of the Bloordale first baseman, which dropped into shallow right field, scoring Leo P. and Savannah.
Otherwise, TP built a formidable lead by taking advantage of errors by the Bombers defence. Several TP batters advanced to first on dropped first strikes or catcher-interference calls.
Once on the base paths, TP baserunners used their respective smarts and aggression to steal a total of 26 bases, including eight runs scored stealing home.
Bloordale mounted a late-game rally, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull within three runs of TP. But the game ended with a pop-up to third.
The TP Varsity Selects (1-0) play their next EBA Varsity Select Loop game on Wednesday, June 5, when they travel to Centennial Park to battle the Martingrove White Sox.
