TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS ERASE AN EARLY 5-0 DEFICIT TO OVERTAKE THE CARDINALS AT CHRISTIE PITS AND EARN THEIR SEVENTH EBA PEEWEE SELECT LOOP VICTORY
Beneath a ceiling of warm and genteel skies, the Toronto Playgrounds Major Peewee Selects defeated the Royal York Red 16-5 in four innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Peewee Select Loop action tonight at Christie Pits Diamond 2.
In the top half of the first, Royal York jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. After a leadoff walk by Alejandra (22), Hayden (42) garnered a walk that put two ducklings on the lake. Jack (23) followed with a one out RBI single that brought Alejandra home with the opening run of the game.
After a two out walk by Jake (1) loaded the bases, Eamon (10) delivered a clutch two RBI single that allowed Hayden and Jack to come home.
Following a walk to Cian (11) that reloaded the bases, Sam stroked a RBI single that brought Jake homeward. A TP error on the play allowed Eamon to motor home from third with another run.
Shaken, but not stirred, TP starter Dash (27) found his mojo as he struck out three in the first to subdue the Cardinals rebellion.
With posthaste urgency, TP answered back with a run in the bottom of the first to trim the gap to 5-1. After drawing a leadoff walk, Julia (18) swiped her way around the horn to third base. Dash crunched a one out RBI triple to bring Julia home with TP’s first run. On the play, the Royal York defence executed a nice defensive putout when they gunned down Dash at home to thwart his brazen bid to stretch his triple into an inside the park home run.
Royal York starter Hayden tallied a strikeout and a groundout in the first frame to quell the TP insurgency.
In 1-2-3 fashion, TP starter Dash rang up two strikeouts and a groundout in the top of the second to keep the Cardinals in their nest.
With a modicum of grit and gusto, TP sent a Barry Manilow Copacabana conga line procession of twelve batters to the dish in the bottom portion of the second frame as they rallied with six runs to take a 7-5 lead.
After back to back walks by Aaron (7) and Luc (12), Alex (88) hit into a fielder’s choice [erasing Shael (5) at home on a 1-2 putout] that reloaded the bases. Julia followed with a one out RBI single to bring Aaron home. A subsequent passed ball would allow Luc to motor home with another run in a chitty, chitty, bang, bang play at the plate.
With two outs and two aboard, Dash stroked a RBI single that allowed Alex to come homeward. Zach followed with a RBI double that brought Julia home with the tying run.
Following a walk by Nathan (9) that loaded the bases, Will drew a RBI walk to bring Dash home from third with the go ahead run. With the bases still juiced to the gills, Shael followed with a RBI single that allowed Zach to come home with a run.
Cardinals starter Hayden chalked up a pair of strikeouts in the second to extinguish the TP uprising.
Royal York threatened in the top of the third after Jack (23) singled and Dylan (25) drew a walk to put two ducklings on the pond. However, TP starter Dash snuffed out the Cardinals rally bid with a strikeout, fly out and groundout. Kudos to TP centre fielder Nathan for making a nifty catch on hard hit fly ball off the bat of Jake (1) to ring up the second out.
Toronto Playgrounds added three runs to their Coleman Cooler in the bottom of the third to extend their advantage to 10-5. After Alex and Julia hit respective singles that put two mallards on the lake, Dash delivered a clutch two out RBI single to bring Alex home.
With two runners on base, Zach followed with a grace under pressure two RBI double that allowed Julia and Dash to come homeward.
Along with a double play resulting from an infield fly ruling by the officiating crew, Royal York reliever Cian tossed a strikeout in the third frame to curtail the TP insurrection.
TP reliever Zach retired the Cardinals in the top of the fourth with a strikeout, fly out and a groundout to keep them off the scoring ledger.
In the bottom of the fourth, TP added six insurance runs to their tally and extended their lead to 16-5. After Shael hit a one out double, Aaron and Luc followed with back to back walks to load the bases. Alex, Julia and Simon B. (10) garnered consecutive bases loaded RBI walks to bring Shael, Aaron and Luc home to do the shimmy, shimmy, shake.
With the bases still loaded, Dash stroked a RBI single to bring Alex homeward. Zach followed suit with a bases loaded RBI single that allowed Julia to come home with a run.
Still with the bases overflowing with a party bowl of red skinned potato salad, Nathan hit into a 1-3 groundout that brought Simon B. home from third with another run.
Cardinals reliever Cian tallied a pair of groundouts and a fly out in the fourth to end the TP coup d’état and bring the curtain down on the proceedings.
The TP Major Peewee Selects (7-3) travel to Ravina Gardens for their next EBA Peewee Select Loop game on Wednesday (July 17) evening against the Annette A’s at 6:00 p.m.
