THE GOLD BOMBERS PREVAIL OVER TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS IN AN ELECTRIFYING FIVE ALARM BARN BURNER AT CHRISTIE PITS
Beneath a checkered duvet of overcast skies, the Bloordale Gold prevailed 23-19 over the Toronto Playgrounds 9U Selects in five innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) 9U Select Loop action this morning at Christie Pits Diamond 3.
The roller coaster proceeding was a well played and highly entertaining affair between two talented and well coached teams. In the end, the gritty Gold Bombers cashed in on their opportunities in the latter innings to eke out a victory over a pesky and undaunted TP lineup.
Bloordale jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After Evan (7) stroked a leadoff single, William (4) followed with a single that put two aboard. With runners at third and second, Matthew (2) hit into a groundout that allowed William to move to third base and brought Evan home with the first run of the game.
With one out and a runner at third, James (10) delivered a RBI single that allowed William to come homeward with another run.
In the bottom half of the first, TP quickly answered back with three runs to take a 3-2 lead. After Adrian (27) reached base on a fielder’s choice, Asher (22) and Elliot (27) delivered back to back one out singles that loaded the bases. Julian (13) followed and hit into a fielder’s choice that erased Elliot at second base, advanced Asher to third, and brought Adrian home with TP’s first run.
With two outs and runners at third and first, Hudson (18) stroked a clutch RBI hit that moved Julian to second and allowed Asher to score the tying run. Charlie (8) followed with a grace under pressure RBI single that brought Julian home with go ahead score.
Not to be outdone, the Gold replied with six in lickety-split fashion in the top portion of the second to retake the lead 8-3. Following consecutive singles to open the inning by Erik (14) and Noel (29) that put two aboard, Ben (11) delivered a two RBI hit that brought Erik and Noel home with the go ahead runs.
Following a one out single by Jack (45) that put two ducks on the pond, Deklyn (25) connected for a RBI single that allowed Ben to come home to roost.
Evan and William followed with respective RBI singles that brought Jack and Deklyn homeward with an additional pair of runs. With two aboard, Matthew hit into a groundout that allowed Evan to score Bloordale’s eighth run of the proceeding.
With a dash of relish and a dollop of mustard, Toronto Playgrounds struck back with five in the bottom of the second frame to deadlock the affair at 8-8. After Bear (6) led off the inning with a single, Wyatt (1) stroked a hit that put two otters on the lake, Chase (9) followed with a RBI single that brought Bear home with a run. A Bloordale error on the play allowed Wyatt to motor homeward with another run.
Subsequently, with one out and a runner on third, Asher connected with a RBI single that brought Chase home with TP’s sixth run.
After a single by Elliot that put two aboard, Julian delivered a RBI hit that allowed Asher to come home with a run that trimmed the shortfall to one. Following a single by Hudson that put a pair of mallards on the pond, Charlie hit into a groundout that brought Elliot home with the tying run.
In tit for tat fashion, Bloordale answered the TP salvo in the top of the third inning by scoring three to reclaim the lead 11-8. Following a pair of two out hits by Erik and Noel that put two aboard, Ben delivered a clutch RBI single that allowed Erik to hustle home with the Gold’s go ahead run.
With two runners on, Michael launched a two RBI double that cleared the bases and brought Noel and Ben homeward with two more runs for the Gold.
Refusing to concede an inch, Toronto Playgrounds replied with six in the bottom vector of the third frame to regain the lead 14-11. After a leadoff hit by Wyatt, Adrian stroked a one out single that put two aboard. Asher followed with a RBI single that brought Wyatt home.
Following a single by Elliot that loaded the bases, Julian delivered a two RBI double that allowed Adrian and Asher to come home and bow tie the game at 11-11.
With two aboard, Hudson connected for a RBI single that brought Elliot home with TP’s go ahead score.
With the wind in their sails, TP added a pair to buttress their tally, With two runners on base, Charlie hit into a groundout that advanced Hudson to third and allowed Julian to come home with a run. Hank (77) followed with a clutch RBI single that brought Hudson homeward bound with TP’s fourteenth run.
Taking the bull by the horns, Bloordale sent a Copacabana procession of eleven batters to the plate in the top half of the fourth and exploded for an eight run haul to retake the lead 19-14. Following a leadoff single by Deklyn, Evan hit a double that put two geese on the lake. With one out, Matthew delivered a two RBI double to bring Deklyn and Evan home and trim the deficit to one.
With a runner on second base, James followed with a RBI single that brought Matthew home with the go ahead score. On the play, the TP defence committed an error that allowed James to scamper around the horn and come home with another run.
Following back to back hits by Jackson (8) and Henry (23) that put a pair of Gold aboard, Erik delivered a two RBI single that cleared the bases and brought in two more runs.
After Noel stroked a single that put two ducklings on the pond, Michael hit a two RBI single that allowed Erik and Noel to come homeward bound and give Bloordale a five run advantage.
Refusing to surrender, TP clawed back with three in the bottom of the fourth to trim the shortfall to 19-17. Following a pair of one out singles by Chase and Adrian that put two runners on base, Asher stroked a RBI single to bring Chase home.
With two outs and two aboard, Julian delivered a clutch two RBI single that allowed Adrian and Asher to come home and close the gap to two.
The Gold tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the fifth to widen their plurality to 23-17. After a leadoff hit by Jack, Deklyn reached base on a single that put two aboard. On the play, the TP defence committed a faux pas that allowed Deklyn to move to second base and brought Jack home with a run.
After a single by Evan put two beavers on the lake, Matthew hit into a one out fielder’s choice that erased Evan at second base and allowed Deklyn to scoot home with another Bloordale run.
With a Gold runner on base, James stroked a two out single that put aboard. On the play, TP committed an error that allowed James to advance to third base and brought Matthew home to roost. Jackson followed with a RBI hit that brought James homeward and give Bloordale a six run cushion.
Donning their rally caps, TP refused to go down without a fight in the bottom portion of the fifth as Hank led off the inning with a line drive between third and second base. However, Bloordale shortstop Henry made a highlight reel defensive play as he snagged the ball in the webbing of his trusty mitt to tally the first out.
Undeterred, TP continued to battle as Bear stroked a one out hit to keep their comeback dreams alive. With a runner on second, Wyatt followed with a RBI double that brought Bear home. Chase followed with a RBI single that allowed Wyatt to score and close the margin to four.
However, the curtain came down on the TP rally bid as the Gold defence chalked up the final two outs to seal the deal on the victory.
