TAKING NO PRISONERS, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS TAME THE WOLVERINES AT CHRISTIE PITS FOR THEIR SECOND VICTORY OF THE 2023 EBA 9U SELECT SEASON

Beneath a cool and breezy canopy of cloudy and sunny skies, the Toronto Playgrounds 9U Selects defeated the Weston 9U Wolverines 13-0 in a 4½ inning Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) 9U Select Loop game this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 3.
In the top portion of the first, the TP 9U Selects defence stymied Weston with two riveting defensive plays that kept the Wolverines off the bases. Battling the glare of the descending sun, TP 9U third baseman Cordell (9) reeled in an eight mile high pop up off the bat of Weston leadoff batter Matthew (2) to tally the first out.

On the next play, the TP pitcher vacuumed up a hot shot off the bat of Henry (4) and made a rocket throw to TP first baseman Kaden (0) to ring up a chitty chitty bang bang 1-3 putout for the second out of the inning.
Taking care of business, Toronto Playgrounds exploded for seven runs in the bottom half of the first inning to stake themselves to an early 7-0 advantage.
Following a leadoff double by Kaden, Eli o. (44) stroked a single that put TP runners on the corners at third and first base. Whit (16) delivered a RBI hit that brought Kaden home with the opening run of the proceedings.

Subsequently, with one out and TP runners on second and first, Cordell stepped into the batter’s box and powered a two RBI triple that brought Whit and Arlo (13) home and increased TP’s lead to 3-0.
With one out and a runner on third, Carson (27) delivered a RBI single that allowed Cordell to come home with the TP 9U Selects fourth run.

Following a single by Rowan (23) that put runners at second and first, Benji (2) launched a two RBI double that brought Carson and Rowan home with two more TP runs.
After a two out hit by Nicola (5) that put TP runners at third and first base, Emmett (4) stroked a clutch RBI single that allowed Benji to score and widen TP’s upper hand to 7-0.

The Weston offence stirred to life in the top of the second frame after Peter (27) and Oscar (8) opened the inning with a pair of back to back singles that put two Wolverines on base.
Unfortunately, Weston was unable to take advantage of their opportunities to score and close the gap.
After Toronto Playgrounds went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second, both Weston and TP were unable to muster any offensive threats in the third inning.
In the top of the fourth, Weston threated to score .However, two sweet 5-4 defensive plays from TP 9U third baseman Whit and Drew (12) put a kibosh on the Wolverines efforts to break the goose egg.

Putting the pedal to the metal, Toronto Playgrounds added six insurance runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 13-0.
Zeroing in on the prize, Arlo led off the frame with a wooly mammoth leadoff inside the park home run shot for TP that brought the fans in the bleacher seats to their feet.

Following a single by Cordell that put a runner aboard, Carson launched a dramatic RBI triple that brought Cordell home with TP’s ninth run. A Wolverine error on the play allowed Carson to hustle home with another TP run.
Subsequently, with two outs and TP runners at second and first base, Drew stroked a single that loaded the bases. Jack (11) followed with a clutch RBI hit that allowed Nicola to some home to roost and widen the TP advantage to 11-0.

With the bases still juiced to the gills, Milo (99) delivered a grace under pressure two RBI single that brought Emmett and Drew home and extend TP’s lead to 13-0.
Donning their rally caps, Weston refused to go quietly into the night as Peter and Oscar led off the top half of the fifth with back to back singles that put two ducks on the pond.
However, TP 9U Select third baseman Arlo turned in a pair of nifty defensive plays to stymie the Wolverines rally bid. Like a pristine Kirby vacuum cleaner, Arlo sucked up a ball off the bat of Piero (27) and tagged out Matthew for the first out as he tried to advance to third.

On the next play, Arlo took receipt of a throw from his pitcher to force out Wolverines baserunner Oscar at third base on a pretty 1-5 putout to tally the second out.
For the icing on the cake, the Toronto Playgrounds defence turned a 6-4 defensive play to record the third out and seal the deal on their victory over Weston.
