IN A TOOTH AND NAIL EBA 11U SELECT LOOP BATTLE, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS ERASE A FIVE RUN DEFICIT TO EARN A DRAW WITH THE BOMBERS AT CHRISTIE PITS
Beneath a pristine ceiling of serene Victoria Day long weekend skies, the Toronto Playgrounds 11U Selects and Bloordale 11U Bombers played to a 9-9 tie in six riveting innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) 11U Select action tonight at Christie Pits Diamond 2.
Trailing 9-8 in the bottom half of the fifth frame, Ellis (44) stroked a grace under pressure two out single that kept TP’s hopes alive. After a shiver me timbers theft of second base, Ellis took advantage of a Bloordale error on the play as he hustled home and scored a dramatic tying run that deadlocked the affair at 9-9.
Nonplussed, Bloordale reliever Marcus B. (30) rang up two strikeouts and a pop out in the fifth inning to end the TP mutiny.
In the top portion of the sixth, TP 11U Select closer Ellis retired the potent Bombers batting order in 1-2-3 fashion with a pair of sizzling strikeouts and a sweet defensive play from third baseman Julian (6), who snagged a hot tamale line drive off the bat of Huck (21) to tally the second out.
Toronto Playgrounds threatened to take home the marbles in the bottom of the sixth frame. After a deft one out steal by Tristan (3), Cole (23) drew a walk that put two ducks on the pond.
With the game on the line, Bloordale reliever Marcus B. rang up two strikeouts to vanquish the TP threat and preserve the tie.
Bloordale staked itself to an early 2-0 advantage in the top half of the first inning. Following a one out walk by Anthony (37), Marcus B. was hit by pitch, putting two Bombers on base.
After Bloordale executed a double steal that put runners at third and second, TP uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Marcus B. to advance to third and brought Anthony home with the opening run of the proceedings.
With two outs and a runner on third. Benjamin (3) dug deep into the box and delivered a clutch RBI double that allowed Marcus B. to come home to roost.
Unfazed, TP 11U Select starter Marcus (68) chalked up a groundout and two strikeouts in the the first frame to end the Bombers attack.
Answering the clarion call, the TP 11U Selects responded with a four spot in the bottom portion of the first to take a 4-2 lead.
With one out, TP exercised patience at the dish as Ellis, Marcus and Chris (7) garnered a trifecta of walks to load the bases. Tristan followed with a two RBI single that advanced Chris to third and brought Ellis and Marcus home with the tying runs.
After a walk by Henry (27) that reloaded the bases, Cole (23) stroked a RBI hit that allowed Chris to come home with a run that gave TP a 3-2 lead.
Subsequently, with two outs and the bases still juiced to the gills, Bloordale uncorked a wild pitch that gave Tristan an opportunity to motor home with another TP run.
In a nitty gritty foray on the hill, Bloordale starter Liam (12) chalked up two strikeouts against TP in the first inning.
Not to be outdone, Bloordale replied in lickety-split fashion with a pair of runs in the top of the second frame to knot the game at 4-4.
After a one out walk by Packer (2), Sofia (19) followed suit with a walk that put two Bombers on the dance floor. Subsequently, with runners on third and second, Packer seized his opportunity to steal home with brazen aplomb and trim the gap to one.
Later, with two outs and the bases loaded, Christian (24) drew a RBI bases loaded walk that allowed Liam (12) to shimmy home with Bloordale’s tying run.
TP 11U Select reliever Cole chalked up a pair of groundouts and a strikeout in the second frame to subdue the Bombers uprising.
Taking care of business, Bloordale reliever Anthony retired Toronto Playgrounds in 1-2-3 fashion with three red-hot strikeouts that kept TP off the scoring ledger in the bottom portion of the second frame.
In the top half of the third, Bloordale scored a run that gave them a 5-4 upper hand.
After a leadoff single by Anthony, Marcus B. and Christopher (25) garnered back to back walks that loaded the bases. With two outs, Alexander (11) drew a bases loaded RBI walk that brought Anthony home with the Bombers go ahead run.
With Cool Hand Luke resolve, TP 11U Select reliever Julian (6) rang up three blistering strikeouts that terminated the Bombers rebellion in the third frame.
Responding in kind, Bloordale reliever Benjamin (3) mowed down TP with three searing strikeouts in the bottom of the third that kept them off the scoreboard and in the BBQ pit.
Taking the bull by the horns, Bloordale exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth to extend their plurality to 9-4.
Following back to back walks by Sofia and Liam to open the inning, Reid (1) was hit by pitch to load the bases. After Marcus S. (18) hit into a fielder’s choice that erased Sofia at home plate, Christian (24) delivered a scorching one out three RBI double that cleared the bases.
With a runner on second, Shawn (99) followed with a RBI double that allowed Christian to motor home with the Bombers ninth run.
Refusing to go quietly into the night, Toronto Playgrounds rallied back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth that sliced the shortfall to 9-8.
Following a one out single and stolen base by Chris, Tristan drove Chris home with a torrid RBI double.
With the wind in their sails, Henry (27) followed with RBI hit that allowed Tristan to hustle home and trim the gap to three.
After a two out walk by Dominic (15) that put two mallards on the lake, Adam (11) delivered a clutch RBI single that brought Henry home with another TP run.
Following a walk by Julian that loaded the bases, Nate (35) garnered a RBI bases loaded walk that allowed Dominic to waltz home and make it a one run game.
In the top portion of the fifth, TP 11U reliever Ellis entered the fray to quickly retire Bloordale’s first two batters with a strikeout and a groundout.
With two outs, the Bombers threatened to extend their lead after Christopher (25) drew a walk and stole second base.
Determined to ratchet up the pressure on the Toronto Playgrounds defence, Christopher made a bold as brass move to steal third. However, TP 11U Select catcher Nate made a lightning throw to third baseman Chris, who slapped an emphatic tag on Christopher to thwart his Grand Theft dreams and chalk up a sweet 2-5 gem to ring up the third out.
And it was at this juncture in the proceedings where TP entered the bottom of the fifth frame and Ellis came face to face with his moment with destiny.
