FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS, THE PESKY RED BIRDS FEND OFF THE GNARLY BUCCANEERS TO EARN THE TREASURE OF SWEET VICTORY AT CHRISTIE PITS

Game Post composed with files from Jeff Kolyn and Aaron Law.

Under pristine cool blue skies, the Cardinals defeated the Pirates 9-3 in a five inning Mosquito Division game this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 3.

In a battle between these two historic divisional rivals, the Cards ultimately prevailed over the Bucs with an all around strong offensive and defensive effort on the field.

After spotting the Pirates an early 3-0 lead, the Cardinal bullpen combined to hold the potent Buccaneer offense off the scoreboard for three scoreless innings. The Red Birds received solid pitching efforts from Rahim (1) for two innings and an inning each from Nigel (4), Issac (12) and Piper (8).

Here are some additional highlights:

  • The Pirates used three first time pitchers [Charlie (3), Oscar (1), and Jonah (10)] tonight, and each had a strikeout.
  • Charlie of the Bucs made two put outs, including an inning ending play at home to Jeremy (4).
  • Pirate Aaron (2) hit a triple and was doubled home by Oscar.
  • With Jonah pitching for the Bucs, Aaron made great snag on a line drive to second. Then with the next batter, Jonah made a great running catch on a short infield blooper.
  • Olivia (6) had a solid single and Ella (8) and Lucas (9) each worked the count for some great walks for the Pirates.
  • Bucs reliever Aaron struck out two Cardinals batters in the fourth.
  • Alexia (14) of the Pirates made a great scoop to force the runner at first to the end inning for the second consecutive scoreless inning.
  • In the fifth inning, with Buccaneers reliever Will (13) pitching, he picked off a Cardinals base runner at second.
