TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS USED A COMBINATION OF SOLID PITCHING AND OPPORTUNE OFFENSE TO DEFEAT THE WHITE SOX AND WIN THEIR FIRST GAME OF THE EBA WEST SELECT LOOP SEASON
Our TP Major Peewee Selects defeated the Martingrove (1) White Sox 7-3 in 4 ½ innings at Christie Pits Diamond 2 to win their first game of the EBA West Select Loop season.
In a game where runs came at a premium, Toronto Playgrounds battled tooth and nail for the victory.
Using a combination of solid pitching and defense, the Major Peewees kept the White Sox offense in neutral and off the scoresheet until the final inning. Meanwhile, TP made the most of their offensive opportunities to put runs across the plate and to build a lead.
TP starting pitcher Jamie (2) and his defense stymied Martingrove in the top of the first as they kept the White Sox off the scoreboard.
The Major Peewees scored two in the bottom of the first to sprint out to a 2-0 lead. Leadoff hitter Ben (4) drew a walk and proceeded to steal two bases to reach third. Ben came blazing home with the first run on a dropped third strike by the White Sox. With two outs, Jack (13) delivered a clutch hit to right field to bring Alexander (20) home.
Major Peewee starter Jamie and his teammates continued to keep the Martingrove in check in the top of the second with solid pitching and defensive prowess.
White Sox starter Joseph (6) kept Toronto Playgrounds off the scoring ledger in the bottom of the third with three strikeouts.
In the top of the third, TP reliever Alexander (20) struck out two White Sox to keep Martingrove at bay.
The Major Peewees scored two runs in the bottom of the third to widen their lead to 4-0. With two outs and the bases loaded, Jamie lined a clutch 2 RBI single into right field that allowed Alexander and Tyler (7) to come homeward bound.
TP southpaw reliever John (27) mowed down the White Sox in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the fourth with three overpowering strikeouts.
Toronto Playgrounds added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 7-0. Key hits came from Ben (a solid RBI single to centre field) and Simon (5) who stroked a RBI double.
In the top of the fifth, Martingrove rallied for three runs to trim the deficit to four. However, TP closer Magnus (19) finally found his rhythm and struck out the last White Sox batter to seal the deal.
The Major Peewee Selects (1-1-1) have a bye in their schedule next week. They will resume play on Wednesday, June 5 when they travel to Carmen Bush to play Martingrove 2.
