THE MIGHTY GIANTS FEND OFF A FEVERISH COMEBACK BID BY THE PESKY LIZZIES IN THE FINAL INNING TO HANG ON FOR THE ROUND ROBIN VICTORY AT CHRISTIE PITS
Tournament Game Post edited with file from Kevin Lawrie
Beneath a ceiling of tranquil summer skies, the Giants edged the Lizzies 9-8 in four nail biting innings of Peewee Division round robin tournament action this evening at the Dovercourt Park Diamond.
Here is a Giants account of the proceedings:
-
In their second round robin game, the Giants scored two in the top of the first , but left the bases-loaded.
-
Ben P. (11) picked up where he left off – from Tuesday’s game winning 3 RBI triple over the Expos – by going 2 for 3 at the dish with a walk.
-
The Giants scored three runs on seven consecutive walks in a VERRRRRRRY LONNNNNNNNG top of the second to take a 5-1 lead. However, the Lizzies relief pitcher eventually settled down to strike out two and get the third out on a play at the plate to bring the curtain down on the frame.
-
In the bottom of the second, the Lizzies rallied and took the lead by scoring four and going ahead 6-5.
-
But the Mighty Giants scored four in the top half of the third to take a 9-6 lead, helped by a two-run home run from Max (10).
-
Giants reliever Ben P. (11) blanked the Lizzies in the bottom of the third.
-
Refusing to surrender, the Lizzies scored two in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one run game.
-
However, the Giants defense threw a Lizzies baserunner out at the plate to hang on for a 9-8 win.
-
In Tuesday’s game, the Giants struck out 10 times and this was the only way they were put out. That pattern continued into tonight’s game – with five more strikeouts for outs – ending only when Alex (13) was thrown out at the plate for the last out of the second inning.
